Title : ANEPIGRAPH.
History of the coin :
The 100 kurush gold coin, minted between 1844 and 1923, embodies a pivotal period at the end of the Ottoman Empire and in the early years of the Turkish Republic. Its introduction coincided with the monetary reform of 1844, which introduced the Ottoman lira, with 100 kurush equivalent to 1 gold lira. This new system aimed to stabilize the currency and modernize the imperial economy.
This coin circulated under the reign of several sultans, including Mehmed V (1909-1918). The obverse features the tughra, the sultan's calligraphic signature, often framed by floral motifs and stars. The reverse features the face value, the year of minting and a floral motif surrounded by a wreath of grapefruits.
Politically, it reflects the efforts of a modernizing power, using currency as a vehicle of legitimacy while maintaining a reliable gold standard despite the upheavals of the early XXᵉ century.
Today, this gold coin is sought after as much for its historical value, its refined aesthetics, as for its pledge in precious metal, making it a prized object for collectors and investors alike.
