PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
OBVERSE :
The Krugerrand's obverse (front), designed by O. Schultz, features the first President of the South African Republic, Paul Kruger. Kruger is surrounded by the name of his nation in Afrikaans and English, two of South Africa's eleven official languages: "SUID-AFRIKA ' SOUTH AFRICA."
REVERSE :
We find a springbok (South African antelope) prancing with KRUGERRAND inscribed above it. The springbok design is attributed to sculptor Coert Steynberg.
Below, the vintage, quantity and purity of the gold.
Presentation of the Krugerrand gold coin:
Born in South Africa and minted without interruption since 1967, the coin features the bust of Paul Kruger on the obverse and the springbok on the reverse. Paul Kruger was President of the South African Republic of the Transvaal from 1883 to 1900. He made history by defending Boer independence from British domination. The springbok is South Africa's national emblem. This antelope is renowned for its great leaps.
History of the Krugerrand gold coin
The South African Mint launched the series in 1967 to promote the country's metal on international markets. The visual was an immediate success: Paul Kruger on the obverse, surrounded by the double legend SUID-AFRIKA / SOUTH AFRICA; on the reverse, the leaping springbok antelope. The first issues came from Pretoria / South African Mint, the workshop that remains the benchmark for the series.
Success came swiftly: volumes rose sharply in the 1970s (e.g. 3,203,000 copies for 1974) and peaked in the middle of the following decade (4,803,925 copies in 1975), establishing the coin as a standard that could be traded as close to the market as possible. At the same time, the product range was split into fractions to widen access for investors: new formats appeared with different vintages.
Price trend of the Krugerrand gold coin over 20 years (2005-2025)
Between 2005 and 2012, the price of gold (in euros) rose sharply, before consolidating in 2013-2018 and rising sharply again in 2019, with record highs in 2024-2025. As the coin embodies 1 oz of fine gold, its intrinsic value replicates these cycles; the premium, generally low on this type, modulates the curve only marginally.
In concrete terms, when gold in euros rises, the coin mechanically appreciates; in periods of calm, the premium tends to remain contained thanks to the depth of the market. Conversely, peaks in demand can temporarily tighten it, without altering the long-term alignment with the metal's trend.
Why is the Krugerrand gold coin a wise investment choice?
The Krugerrand contains exactly one ounce of fine gold, offering direct exposure to the metal without excessive cost. Its premium is reasonable, and it is recognized worldwide, making it easy to trade anywhere. Thanks to its very large production, it remains available long after minting, ensuring optimum liquidity and reducing the gap between buying and selling prices.
VARIABLE VINTAGES / EFFIGIES
Vintages and/or effigies of these coins are sent out randomly according to our stocks.
As these are bullion coins and not collector's items, their years of issue or effigies have no impact on their value or resale price.
