REVERSE :
The reverse of this coin features the symbol of the French Republic: the cockerel walking to the left. Surrounding this animal is the motto of the French Republic: ‘Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité’, as well as the value of the coin (10 Francs).
History of the 10 Francs Marianne Coq coin:
Created by decree on July 20, 1899, the 10 franc "Marianne Coq" coin, little sister to the 20 Francs Marianne Coq, is part of the IIIᵉ République'It was part of the IIIᵉ République's desire to assert a stable republican identity after the political upheavals of the late XIXᵉ century. At the time, France was modernizing its institutions, public life was riven by the Dreyfus affair, and secularization culminated in the 1905 law: it was in this climate of civic affirmation that this small gold denomination, designed for savings and everyday circulation, was born.
Engraved by Jules-Clément Chaplain, it accompanied an economy still based on gold standards, and remains a familiar reference for savers, hence its popular classification as a "demi-napoléon". It was minted from 1899 to 1914, the last year before the currency disruptions brought about by the war. Unlike the 20 francs, this coin bears the motto "Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité" on the reverse.
The coin definitively lost its legal status on June 25, 1928, when France stabilized its currency around the "Poincaré franc". More than a century later, its history sums up one ambition: to offer, in a republican and secular France, an accessible, durable and instantly recognizable gold medium for household confidence.
Price trend of the 10 Franc Marianne Coq coin over the last twenty years (2005 to 2025)
Since 2005, this coin has followed the trend of gold in euros. After a rather quiet 2005-2008, the rise accelerated to a peak in 2011, driven by the debt crisis. This is followed by a consolidation phase (2012-2018), with highs and lows, despite sustained demand for physical gold.
From 2020 onwards, inflation, monetary policies and geopolitical tensions give the yellow metal a powerful boost. The result: new highs in 2023-2025, and an active retail market where spreads with the "price" (the premium) vary according to condition, vintage and availability. In practice, therefore, the 10-franc module moves in line with the underlying trend in gold, with intermediate breaths typical of the markets. For accurate tracking, rely on real-time quotations.
