History of the 10 Francs Napoléon coin
In the XIXᵉ century, France consolidated a monetary system based on gold: the 10 franc module was part of this logic of stability and unification. Under the Second Empire, the first issues supplied the economy with metal "small denominations", widely used in daily payments. A variant known as "petit module" (≈ 17 mm) appeared in the early 1850s; it remained rare, as some of the strikes were recast during subsequent readjustments, which explains the persistent tension over certain vintages.
After 1870, the IIIᵉ République relaunched the 10 franc: the Ceres type was minted in particular in the years 1895-1899, prolonging the use of this face value as a practical and easily identifiable standard. During the Belle Époque, the need for additional gold and the search for a "safe" currency continued to support the circulation of this format.
The series came to a halt with the outbreak of the First World War, during the great monetary upheaval it provoked; in all, over 23.6 million of these coins were issued between the mid-19th and mid-19th centuries.were issued between the middle of the century and 1914, testifying to their lasting role in French economic life.

Between 2005 and 2011, the rise in gold prices boosted the coin's value, especially as the premium became tighter during the financial crisis.tions (up to ~93% in October 2008), illustrating the impact of supply/demand on small French denominations. The consolidation of 2013-2015 compressed the premium, before a new upward cycle from 2019, driven by the appetite for safe-haven assets.
At the end of 2024-2025, the upward momentum of gold's breakout puts French coins back in the spotlight: the metal's rise, combined with occasional supply tensions, sustains transaction levels.
