An emblematic investment coin of the Anglo-Saxon world, the British "sovereign" has established itself as a standard of gold circulating in Europe and beyond. Its success is due to the consistency of its characteristics, its massive production over nearly two centuries and its immediate recognition by professionals.
History of the Le Souverrain coin
The story begins at the end of the 15th century: a first issue appeared under Henry VII in 1489, before the United Kingdom's Great Recoinage in 1816 established a modern gold-based framework.
As early as 1817, London relaunched the minting of the module, which became the instrument of reference for an economy integrated into world trade. The British XIXᵉ century, a century of industrial expansion and commercial and financial domination, provided the perfect breeding ground: the coin circulated massively and was exported via a network of workshops spread across the Empire (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Ottawa, Bombay, Pretoria), in order to supply the settlement of trade and the needs of banks. This geography of minting reflected a simple monetary ambition: to guarantee the same quality and acceptance everywhere.
The First World War disrupted the gold standard and its everyday use declined, but the coin retained a lasting role as a heritage and financial asset, sustained by the confidence its regularity inspires. Even today, this historical continuity explains why it is as popular with European savers as the "20 francs" modules of the Latin Union.
Souverain price trend over the last twenty years (2005 to 2025)
As with any investment format, its valuation follows the price of gold. Between 2005 and 2011, the metal experienced a powerful upward cycle, before consolidating between 2013 and 2015, then recovering from 2019 onwards, with peaks reached in 2020. In 2024-2025, new records: the macro context (buying central banks, inflation, geopolitical uncertainties) supported the ounce and, in turn, the price of the coin.
Why invest in Souverain?
For beginners in physical gold, this format combines accessibility, standardization and ease of resale. Accessibility: an entry ticket of less than an ounce means you can buy gradually (DCA) without tying up large sums. Standardization: produced by the Royal Mint and its historic workshops to consistent specifications, it is easy to appraise and benefits from transparent prices, comparable from one professional to another. Liquidity: demand is European and worldwide; the coin is easy to resell.
VARIABLE VINTAGES / EFFIGIES
Vintages and/or effigies of these coins are sent randomly according to our stocks.
