An investment coin in the "20 francs" format of the protectorate, Tunisian gold uses the well-known Latin Union standard: alloy 900 ‰, approx. 6.45 g for ~21 mm. Minted in Paris ("A" mark) and put into circulation under French administration, it offers a template legible by all professionals, with an easily verifiable fine gold weight.
History of the 20 Francs Tunisie coin
After the establishment of the protectorate (Treaty of Bardo, 1881), Tunisia adopted a coinage aligned with French standards. The 20 franc gold coin was introduced in the 1890s, based on the common Latin Union standard: same weights and titles as the French coin, to facilitate trade and interoperability within the European monetary area of the time.
The first issues date from 1891 - under the reign of Ali III Bey - and cover the vintages from 1891 to 1902, still in gold 900 ‰ and 6.45 g, with a diameter of around 21 mm. Circulation then continued with other series at the beginning of the XXᵉ century, until the end of the 1920s; the 1922-1928 vintages in the name of Muhammad VI testify to the format's continuity in a context of administrative and financial modernization .
Minting was carried out by the Monnaie de Paris, ensuring strict control of technical specifications. All in all, this "Tunisian" 20 franc illustrates the encounter between local roots (beylical power, North African economy integrated into Mediterranean flows) and a harmonized European monetary architecture. It is this dual heritage - French protection and UML standards - that explains its current readability for investors .
Price trend for 20 Tunisian francs over the last twenty years (2005 to 2025)
Over the past twenty years, the price has followed the same trajectory as that ofgold: a marked upward phase from 2005 to 2011, followed by a breather between 2013 and 2015, then a recovery from 2019 onwards, with peaks in 2020 and new records in 2024-2025 (in euros).
Why invest in 20 Francs Tunisie?
It's investment gold in a standardized format: weight, denomination and dimensions are perfectly known, so it's easy to appraise and resell. Its good metal/price ratio (≈ 6.45 g for a compact coin) means you can build up tangible savings without tying up excessive amounts with each purchase. Stocks come from period issues: supply is not infinite, which makes it a rare commodity in quantity compared to continuous modern minting. Finally, the popularity of the "20 francs" format in Europe makes this type of coin particularly easy to exchange .
