Description: Crowned shield of France between two H's, the letter of workshop (M) at the point of the shield.
Legend: + XPS. VINCIT. XPS. REGNAT. XPS. IMP. 1555.. (Christ conquers, Christ reigns, Christ commands).
Silver coin minted with the effigy of a monarch, first in Italy, then in France under the reign of Louis XII, and originally worth about ten sols.
It was not until the end of the 15th century that the monetary portrait reappeared, in Italy, in the form of coins known for this reason as testons, which would be imitated throughout Western Europe.
