Silver coin minted with the effigy of a monarch, first in Italy, then in France under the reign of Louis XII, originally worth around ten sols. It was not until the late 15th century that the monetary portrait reappeared, in Italy, in the form of coins known for this reason as “testoni”, which would be imitated throughout the West (History and Its Methods, 1961, p. 361).
