History of the 20 Francs Marianne Coq coin

The "20 francs" module established itself in the XIXᵉ century as the standard for savings and payments in France. In this context, the IIIᵉ République puts forward a republican type that will become the most familiar to savers: the Marianne Coq, the work of Jules-Clément Chaplain. Issues cover the Belle Époque from 1899 to 1914, with two periods: 1899-1906 (initial period) then 1907-1914 (the "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité" era).

Minting was carried out by the Monnaie de Paris, according to the unchanging 20 F standard (weight/title/dimension), which facilitated international acceptance. After the war, the type re-emerged in the form of stock issues and reissues, including the famous "Pinay" (1951-1960): official backdated issues 1907-1914 for the gold market, which explains the abundance of examples in superb condition in these vintages.
