History and characteristics of the 5 Franc Ecu

In the 19th century, the 5 franc ecu was very popular. This large silver coin was a reference value.

Towards the end of the same century, speculation on silver increased, resulting in a readjustment of the value of currencies.

For this reason, several European countries such as France, Switzerland, Italy and Belgium concluded an agreement on 23 December 1865 to mint their currencies on an identical monetary standard, giving rise to the Latin Monetary Union on 1 August 1866. Greece joined in 1868.

Thus, during this century, the 5 franc ecu was very popular in several countries. This large silver coin was in itself a reference value.

- the 5 franc ecu struck between 1795 and 1889 for France

- the 5 franc Leopold II ecu minted from 1867 to 1876 for Belgium.
